Besuch in Illinois 2005 - Illinois Visit 2005

Hier sind die übrigen Photos, die ich beim Besuch der Eltern in Illinois gemacht habe. Oben abgelichtet sind die beiden Deutschen auf dem Grundstück der Coens mit der Jadghütte im Hintergrund.

Dort sangen, tranken, trompeteten, dudelten, röhrten und quakten wir unter Einsatz aller greifbaren Instrumente und Tiergeräuschmacher ins Neue Jahr hinein, ...

There we sang, drank, bugled, bag piped, elk roared and quacked into the New Year, employing all reachable instruments and animal sounds simulators,...


... zogen alle Anwesenden vor die Kamera, ...

... schauten den Herren des Hauses beim Zigarre qualmen zu, ...

... watched the masters of the houses puff cigars, ...


... gingen im Shawnee Nationalpark spazieren und hatten überhaupt eine gute Zeit. Alle sind sich einig, das es ein gelungenes Treffen der Coens und Schlabitzens war und das dieses in der nahen Zukunft wiederholt werden sollte. Der amerikanische Zweig der Schlabitz-Familie kann es natürlich wiedermal nicht abwarten und zieht gleich Anfang Juni ganz nach Illinois. Amy merkte wie sehr sie ihre Eltern vermißt und will trotz der Schönheit der Reservation dichter bei Muttern leben. Nun müssen sich Edeltraut und Dieter nur einen kleinen Schubs geben und auch hierher ziehen. Das spart eine Menge Flugtickets! ;-)

... enjoyed walks in the Shawnee National Forest, and generally had a great time. Everybody agrees, that it was a sucessful meeting of the Coens and the Schlabitzens, and that we should repeat it in the near future. Of course, the American branch of the Schlabitz family can't wait at all and is moving all the way to Illinois at the beginning of June. Amy noticed how much she missed her parents and wants to live closer by mom, despite the beauty of the reservation. Now Edeltraut and Dieter only need to nudge themselves a bit and move here, too. It would save a bunch of plane tickets! ;-)

Mutti in Memphis - Mom in Memphis

Einen der tollsten Gehirnfürze hatte ich kurz vor der Ankunft meiner Ellis zum Weihnachtsbesuch in Illinois. Uns Muttern ist, trotz Mauer und Medienzensur, ein langjähriger Elvisfan und hatte nie die Chance auch nur einmal in Richtung Caddillac zu juchzen. Und was ist nur schlappe 4 Stündli südlich vom Haus der Schwiegereltern? Memphis, die Heimat des Blues, Geburtsort des Rock'n'Rolls! Und was ist in Memphis, neben den legendären Sun Studios meine ich, zu sehen? Jupp, Graceland, Home of the King. Dort wohnte er und dort wurde er begraben. 3717 Elvis Presley Boulevard.

I had one of the coolest brain farts just before my parents arrived for their Christmas visit in Illinois. Mommy dearest is, despite the Wall and media censorship, an Elvis fan of many years, and never had the faintest chance to even remotely squeal towards a pink cadillac. And what is just a pithy 4 hours south of the in-laws's house? Memphis, home of the Blues, birthplace of Rock'n'Roll! And what else is in Memphis, other than legendary Sun Studios that is? Yup, Graceland, home of the King. There he lived and there he lies in peace. 3717 Elvis Presley Boulevard.

Ich hatte das Warnschild, daß keine Blitz(!)photographie erlaubte, missverstanden und meine Kamera erst gar nicht mitgenommen. Die Photos wären wohl auch nicht so toll geworden, da die Beleuchtung gedämpft war. Auf der offiziellen Webseite gibt es aber eine virtuelle Tour.

I didn't take my camera, because I had misunderstood the warning sign that said that no flash(!) photography was allowed, but the pictures probably wouldn't have turned out so great anyway, because of the dimmed lighting. However, there is a virtual tour on the official website.

Hier ist Mutti vor dem berühmten Musiknotentor und kann sich kaum davon zurückhalten da jetzt einfach mal durchzurennen. Aber nix da, wieder zurück über die Straße und in der Schlange auf das nächste Touristenshuttle warten...

Here is mom in front of the famous "music note gate" and can barely keep herself from just running inside already. But no can do, we got to go back across the street, stand in line and wait for the next tourist shuttle...

Die Ziegelmauer war übersäht mit tausenden Inschriften von Fans aus aller Welt und aus allen Jahrzehnten seit den 50'ern.

The brick wall was covered in thousands of inscriptions by fans from all over the world and from all decades since the 50s.

Ich hatte eine große Dosis Kitsch und Grelles erwartet, wurde aber angenehm überrascht. Natürlich kann man über das Doppelbett mit rundem Halbdach komplett in rosa Plüsch nur schmunzeln, aber alles in allem waren die Räume der Unteretage und des Kellers recht geschmacksvoll eingerichtet. Die Oberetage ist für die Öffentlichkeit nicht zugänglich. Die Privatspähre dieser Zuflucht zu Elvis' Lebenzeiten, wird auch heute noch gewahrt.

I expected a big deal of kitsch and glare, but was pleasantly suprised. While you can only smile over the all pink all plush king-sized bed with huge round canopy, the rest of the rooms of the first floor and the basement were furnished with much taste. The second level is off limits to the public, as the privacy of this area is guarded just as much today as it was when Elvis lived there.

Nach der Haustour gab es noch den Meditationsgarten, wo Elvis, sein Bruder und seine Eltern begraben sind, die beiden Privatjets, das Automuseum mit seinen eigenen und in Spielfilmen gesehenen Wagen und haufenweise Souvenirläden. Zur Übernachtung gibt es noch das Heartbreak Hotel, wo man wie der King wohnen kann.

After the tour of the mansion, there are the Meditation Garden, where Elvis, his brother and his parents are buried, the two custom jets, the car museum with the cars he owned and used in movies, and loads of souvenir shops. You can also stay the night and live like the King at the Heartbreak Hotel.

Als wir endlich fertig waren, wurde es schon dunkel und wir fuhren noch eine Ehrenrunde um die Weihnachtsbeleuchtung zu bestaunen. Alles in allem ein gelungener Ausflug, den ich allen Musikfreunden und Elvisfans nur empfehlen kann.

When we were finally done, it was getting dark already and we drove a lap of honor to gape at the Christmas lights. All in all, it was a great trip, which I sincerely can recommend to all music and Elvis fans.
